TherapyNotes and ICD-10

ICD-10 is the 10th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD), produced by the World Health Organization (WHO).

As a behavioral health professional, your best tool to understand ICD codes is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). The DSM outlines the criteria for determining a diagnosis and provides you a list of the corresponding ICD codes. Unlike the DSM-IV, which only documented ICD-9 codes, the DSM-5 lists both ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes for each diagnosis.

Using ICD-10 codes in TherapyNotes

ICD-10 codes should be used for all appointments that have a date of service on or after October 1, 2015. TherapyNotes' built-in DSM-5 search allows you to search for both ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes, and selecting the diagnosis from these search results will automatically fill in the correct ICD-10 code for the diagnosis.

TherapyNotes always copies the diagnosis from your most recent note for a client. If you have previous notes which use ICD-9 codes, TherapyNotes will notify you that these codes need to be updated when codes are pulled forward from the previous note.

October 2018 DSM-5 Update

The APA released an update to the DSM-5 effective October 1, 2018. This update includes several new and updated codes pertaining to withdrawal, a new "Factitious disorder" variation, and the new code Z03.89 for "No diagnosis or condition." For specific information on these coding changes, read the DSM-5 update from the APA.

We strive to keep TherapyNotes updated with the latest advancements in the industry, and our DSM-5 search has been updated to include these updated codes and diagnostic criteria. Be sure to update your clients' diagnosis codes on Treatment Plans when applicable and use the updated ICD-10 codes on notes for dates of service on or after October 1, 2018.

Please be aware that any notes already completed before this time will not be automatically updated. Be sure to update all diagnosis codes for these clients upon their next note.
