ICD-10 codes must be entered for all appointments with a date of service. ICD-10 is the 10th revision of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD), produced by the World Health Organization (WHO). TherapyNotes simplifies this process with its built-in ICD-10 search, allowing you to quickly find and select the correct diagnosis and automatically fill in the ICD-10 code.
Searching for an ICD-10 Code within TherapyNotes
You can search for an ICD-10 code in treatment plans, progress notes, psychological evaluations, and consultation notes. Simply create the type of note that fits your needs.
Under the Diagnosis section, enter a search term in the diagnosis code field, and a list of matching results will appear. For example, searching for “Insomnia” will display all relevant codes in the dropdown menu.
Note: When a behavioral health clinician searches for an ICD-10 code, TherapyNotes prioritize codes starting with “F” and then “Z” to make finding the most relevant codes easier.
Custom Codes
To navigate to the Custom Codes, click Settings > Notes and Coding > Diagnosis Codes.
The Custom Codes tab allows users to add and manage custom diagnosis codes and descriptions for their practice.
- To add a custom code, enter the code in the Dx Code field and a description in the Description field.
- Once both fields contain a value, click Add Custom Code.
- Selecting Add Custom Code will add the new code to the top of the list of previously defined codes. Added codes can be removed by selecting the X button to the right of the code in the list.
- Once the custom codes are added/removed, click Save Settings
Non-Billable Codes
To navigate to the Non-Billable ICD-10CM-Codes, click Settings > Notes and Coding > Diagnosis Codes.
This function can be used by a practice to designate specific ICD-10 codes as non-billable. Codes may be set as nonbillable in two different ways.
- To set all ICD-10 codes that have a description that contains the word "unspecified" as a non-billable code, select the checkbox option labeled Mark all diagnosis codes contain the word "Unspecified" as nonbillable.
- Designating a specific ICD-10 code as non-billable. To do this, search for an existing ICD-10 code by either the code or by the description and then select the code from the list. Selecting the ICD-10 code will then add it to the list of non-billable codes.
Removing Non-Billable Codes
You can remove an ICD-10 code from the list of non-billable codes by selecting the X button to the right of the code in the list.
The non-billable code changes are not saved unless you click Save Settings.
