Pharmacies may send renewal and change requests within TherapyNotes ePrescribe to confirm, update, or modify prescriptions. These requests allow prescribers to review refill needs, approve, or deny changes, and communicate directly with pharmacies within the ePrescribe tab or the patient’s eRx tab.
Renewal Requests
To access Renewal (Refill) Requests, select the ePrescribe tab.
- Click the Pharmacy Requests tab.
- In the Message Type field, select Renewal Requests from the dropdown menu.
Search results can be filtered by using the following criteria:
- Specific Providers: Click the dropdown menu next to View Messages For field.
- Message Types: Click the dropdown menu next to the Message Type field
Respond to Renewal Requests
When reviewing a pharmacy request, you can choose from the following actions to respond to renewal requests by clicking the Action dropdown menu:
- Forward: Forward the prescription request to another qualified prescriber within your practice.
- Remove: This removes the request from your queue. This option should only be used to remove duplicate requests that have already been addressed.
- Modify suggested: Edit the prescription and/or pharmacy information. When you modify the prescription:
- A new pending prescription is created in the designated provider’s prescription report.
- Ther pharmacy is notified that the original request was denied, but a new prescription will follow.
- Choose a new drug: This allows you to choose a different medication to prescribe than the one originally requested. When a different medication is chosen:
- A new pending prescription is created in the designated provider’s prescription report.
- The pharmacy is notified that the original request was denied, but a new prescription with the chosen medication will follow.
- Deny: This option denies the renewal request and will send a denial message directly to the pharmacy.
- Renew: This approves the prescription renewal and allows you to specify the number of additional refills. By selecting the refill amount, you authorize the current fill, plus the specified number of additional refills.
- If desired, enter specific notes in the Response Notes to Pharmacist field to send to the pharmacist that is handling the renewal request.
- After reviewing your response to a renewal request, select the Send button at the bottom left corner or top left corner of the page.
Change Requests
There may be instances where pharmacies may send Change Requests to ask providers to change something about an electronic prescription before the pharmacy can fill it.
To access Change Requests, select the ePrescribe tab.
- Click the Pharmacy Requests tab.
- Select Change Requests from the dropdown menu.
Respond to Change Requests
To respond to change requests, click the Action dropdown menu. The actions listed vary depending on the type of prescription the message pertains to:
- Prior Authorization Actions
- Approved by payer: Approves the medication prescribed by the provider (requires prior authorization confirmation number)
- Denied by payer: Will deny the request and sends a denial message to the pharmacy. You must select a Denial Reason from the drop-down selections.
- Forward: Allows you to forward the request to another provider in practice.
- Prior authorization not attempted: Will deny the request and sends a denial message to the pharmacy.
- Cancel: Deny the change request and cancel the original prescription – will deny the request and cancels the original prescription.
- Generic Substitution, Therapeutic Interchange, Type D, Type OS, and Type S Actions
- Approve selected alternative: Approves the alternative that was selected based on the pharmacy’s suggestion.
- Deny - deny the change request and keep original prescription
- Forward: Forwards the request to another provider in practice.
- Modify suggested: Select to change the prescription details and/or pharmacy information. The original prescription will be placed in a pending status and listed in the appropriate provider’s Prescription Report. The pharmacy is notified that the requested change was denied and that a corrected prescription will be sent.
- Choose a new drug: When choosing a different drug to prescribe, the prescription becomes a pending prescription in the appropriate provider’s prescription report. This will alert the pharmacy that the requested change has been denied and that a corrected prescription will be sent.
- Cancel - deny the change request and cancel the original prescription
- Type U Actions
- Validate: Approves the medication prescribed by the provider (requires prescriber identification).
- Deny - deny the change request and keep original prescription
- Cancel - deny the change request and cancel the original prescription
After reviewing your response to a change request, select the Send button at the bottom left corner or top right corner of the page.
