Telehealth Coding Setting

Role Required: Practice Biller

Telehealth coding requirements often vary by payer. For practices using TherapyNotes Telehealth, you can configure a payer-specific place of service (POS) code and/or modifier to be included on claims submitted for telehealth sessions, as well as on paper forms such as CMS-1500 and superbills.

Configuring Telehealth Coding Overrides

To configure Telehealth Coding Overrides for a specific payer, follow these steps:

  • Navigate to Payer > Select the payer's name > Edit Telehealth Coding Overrides. Enter the Place of Service (POS) and/or Modifier as necessary.

Using Telehealth Coding Feature

When the “Use Telehealth Session” checkbox is selected for an appointment, configured Telehealth Coding Overrides will be used for any claim submitted for the date of service.

The place of service code will override your practice or location settings, and the modifier code will be included with any other applicable modifiers from your settings when viewing claim details, creating a CMS-1500 or on a generated superbill.

Note: If you have previously set up a separate location for telehealth in TherapyNotes, you can work to phase out the separate location and/or disable it. If you have existing appointments at this separate telehealth location and intend to retain it, leave them unchanged. Otherwise, change the location to another remaining location, ensure the telehealth box is checked, and click Save.
